Weak water pressure makes showers frustrating, slows down appliances and can be an early sign of a bigger plumbing problem. Plumber On Demand finds out why your pressure dropped, whether it is one fixture or the whole building, and fixes the cause instead of just the symptom.
Common causes of low water pressure
- Clogged aerators and shower heads from mineral build-up in hard water areas
- Partly closed or failing valves including the main shutoff and fixture shutoffs
- A failing pressure reducing valve that lets pressure drop too low or swing up and down
- Corroded galvanized pipe that narrows on the inside over time
- Hidden leaks that steal flow before it reaches your taps
- Supply issues such as an undersized or damaged water service line
How we diagnose it
We start by measuring the pressure at the main and comparing it with what you get at the fixtures. If the problem is in one tap, it is usually the fixture, aerator or shutoff. If the whole house or building is low, we look at the main valve, the pressure reducing valve, the water service and the piping in between. That tells us exactly where the restriction is before any work is done.
Fixing it at the source
Depending on what we find, the fix might be as simple as cleaning or replacing an aerator or cartridge, or as involved as replacing a pressure reducing valve, repiping a corroded section or repairing a leak. If low pressure is caused by the water service itself, see our water main service page.
When low pressure is urgent
A sudden drop in pressure across the whole property, especially with the sound of running water or new damp spots, can mean a leak. Shut off the main if you suspect one and call us right away.
Low Water Pressure Repair FAQs
Why is my water pressure low in only one faucet?
When only one fixture is weak, the cause is usually a clogged aerator, a worn cartridge or a partly closed shutoff valve under that fixture.
Why did my water pressure suddenly drop?
A sudden drop can be caused by a leak, a failing pressure reducing valve, a closed valve after other work, or a problem with the municipal supply. If neighbours are fine, the issue is likely on your property.
Can old pipes cause low water pressure?
Yes. Older galvanized steel pipes corrode on the inside and slowly narrow, which reduces flow. Replacing the worst sections usually restores pressure.
