Water Main and Water Service Line Repair
Home › Plumbing Services › Water Main and Water Service Line Repair

Your water service line brings all of the water into your property, and the main shutoff valve is what lets you stop it in an emergency. When either one fails, everything downstream is affected. Plumber On Demand repairs and replaces main shutoff valves and water service lines for homes and buildings across Ontario.
Water main work we handle
- Main shutoff valve replacement when the valve is seized, leaking or will not close
- Water service line leaks at the foundation wall, meter area or underground
- Water service replacement for old, undersized, lead or galvanized lines
- Low pressure from the service caused by corrosion or damage to the line
- Pressure reducing valves installed near the main to protect fixtures and appliances
Signs your water service needs attention
Watch for low pressure throughout the property, a wet spot on the basement wall where the line enters, a damp patch in the yard, discoloured water or a main valve that will not turn. Older homes in Ontario may also still have lead or galvanized service lines, which are worth replacing for both water quality and flow.
Replacing a seized main shutoff
Many main valves have not been touched in years and seize in place, which is exactly when you need them most. Replacing an old multi-turn valve with a quarter-turn ball valve means you can shut off the water in seconds during an emergency.
Working with your municipality
The water service is usually split between the municipality, which owns the line up to the property line or curb stop, and the property owner, who is responsible from there into the building. We help you understand which part is yours and coordinate the work on the private side. For commercial properties, see our commercial water systems page.
Water Main and Water Service Line Repair FAQs
Where is my main water shutoff?
In most Ontario homes it is in the basement or utility room on the front wall, where the water line enters, often near the water meter.
Who is responsible for the water service line?
Usually the municipality is responsible up to the property line or curb stop, and the property owner is responsible from there into the building. Rules vary by municipality.
How do I know if I have a lead water service?
Lead lines are dull grey, soft and do not respond to a magnet. Homes built before the mid 1950s are more likely to have one. We can check yours on site.
